DANIDA Judicial Officers Alumni Tipped on Curbing Violence Against Women

At least 25 Judicial Officers on Friday (November 29, 2019) took part in a one-day training on Curbing Violence against Women and Girls at the Judicial Training Institute (JTI).

JTI and the DANIDA Alumni team organized the training, which explored the role of Judicial Officers in curbing violence against women.

The JTI Executive Director, Hon. Lady Justice Damalie Lwanga, said the workshop was organized to promote networking amongst the DANIDA Alumni in the Judiciary and share knowledge on emerging issues in gender and the law, particularly on SGBV.

The Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny Dollo said the training was timely and was being carried out at a time when the world is vigorously engaged in preventive and protection activities against violence against under the global season dubbed 16 Days of Activism against Violence.

"Through this training, the Judiciary is equally engaged in activism to eliminate violence against women," he said.

Adding that, "violence against women takes various forms, and thus it requires specialized trainings and skilling of staff to eliminate discrimination."

The DCJ also commended the Ambassador of Denmark in Uganda, and the Danish people for their generous support to various government programmes in Uganda, and in particular, the support granted to the Judiciary to conduct such important trainings for judicial officers.

H.E His Nicolaj A. Hejberg Petersen, the Danish Ambassador to Uganda, said violence against women is not only devastating women's lives and dividing communities but also undermines development efforts.

He also congratulated the four Judicial officers who  won this year's grant and added that the Alumni activity grant is intended to support them in staying in touch to ensure committed collaboration with alumni network members.

"This workshop is a great way of growing your professional networks and should be extended beyond the Judiciary to other professionals under the Danida alumni network," he said.

Notably present was the Executive Assistant to the Ambassador, Mr. Charles Magala, as well as Mr Peter Okwoko, a representative of the president of the Danida Alumni network.

Mr Okwoko encouraged the alumni to join the network in order to learn of the many opportunities that Danida offers.

Their Worships; HW Winfred Kyobiika Naigaga, HW Caroline Byakutaga, HW Sikhoya Naume and HW Winnie N. Jatiko scooped this year's Danida Alumni Grant and doubled as facilitators of the training.

The training covered topics such as cultural, institutional and legal barriers to access to justice in cases of VAWG, Handling children and witnesses in VAWG and sentencing in VAWG among others.
